The project lead may be from your organization; however, must not have been involved in any part of the selection process to include mentoring/advisor role offered. 

The training is generally completed within six months before applying for certification exam through PMI-approved providers who offer formal classroom instruction, webinars, private coaching sessions and other approved instructional formats that meet the specific requirements outlined on pmpcertification.org

To maintain an active credential: Project managers must recertify every four years to maintain active status.

Project managers may recertify by: 

(i) obtaining 60 hours of formal project management education from a provider that is approved by the Project Management Institute (PMI); and, PMP candidates must also demonstrate at least 24 months experience in managing projects within five years before application date; OR, 

(ii) completing 30 contact hours of professional development or their equivalent through continuing education activities such as attending conferences/seminars hosted by organizations outside of PMI-approved providers for this credential.

Individuals who earn this certification are required to take the exam every four years. The same requirements apply if you earned your certificate before May 2017 when these changes were announced.

What does the PMP course include?

How is the PMP exam conducted?

Candidates may choose to take the exam at an official PMI location or in a computer-based environment. The format of your choice will be determined during registration, but you'll need to make this decision before registering for the exam.

Candidates who register and pay by credit card must select their preferred testing method before submitting payment information online; paper registrations are not accepted through the website because they require additional processing time.

If you're registered as a candidate with one organization that supports multiple types of exams, then it's necessary to designate which type(s) of examination you want when filling out the application form on PMI's website.

The options for taking the exam are: 

If using pencil and paper - Candidates will be given 120 minutes to complete the exam and there is no penalty for answering questions incorrectly.

If using a computer - Candidates are allotted 90 minutes to answer all of the item pool questions in each section, with one exception: 

The final six hours of testing time (or more) must be used on general knowledge areas such as ethics or project management processes that may not have been covered by specific coursework, so it's necessary to take care when choosing your PMP study materials.

The Exam includes 200 multiple-choice items which need to be completed within four hours. The candidate has an additional two and a half hours after completing this part of the exam if they want to review their answers before submitting them; otherwise, the candidate will not have another opportunity to review their answers before submitting them.

This process is called Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT). The computer automatically identifies how well you are doing and determines the difficulty for each of the items to ensure that most people answer more questions correctly as they proceed through each section of the exam, which maximizes your chance of passing. 

Computers will be monitored by a proctor or monitor who ensures that candidates follow instructions, comply with time limits, understand conditions and restrictions imposed on test-takers during testing sessions, remain within designated areas when taking tests, and observe rules about confidentiality at all times.

A timer signals when it's time to move on from one set of questions to another.

There will be a 15-minute break in between each section of the exam, and there are no breaks during the last hour before it's time to stop.

It is possible that you may not reach all 200 questions on your first attempt; however, if this happens then you can take advantage of an opportunity to "mark" answers for review so they'll still count towards your score even though you're unable to complete them.

When answering a question, candidates should always remember that each response must fully address both parts (A and B) when applicable or contain an explanation as to why A does not apply. 

What happens if I fail the PMP exam?

You will need to wait two weeks and then retake the exam. The next time you take it, your project management experience is valid for five years (instead of four) since there are more than three certification attempts within twelve months.

You may also apply up to one year from when you took or were denied certification with the Board's approval on an individual basis if extenuating circumstances exist that prevented you from taking the examination. 

When do I have to renew my PMP certificate?

To keep your PMP credential valid, you must renew the certificate every five years. You may not do so within a year of passing the exam which would render it invalid.

The fee is US$125 for each renewal period and can be paid by credit card or bank transfer. If there will be an interruption in service, such as being on maternity leave, then contact the certification body in addition to sending a written confirmation about this gap before requesting that your credential remains active with no additional charge during this time frame (maximum 12 months).

Normally the first registration expires after three years from when you registered, but if you wait until up to two weeks past the expiration date without submitting a new request they will cancel what's left of your certification period.
