Models such as the Boston Consulting Group's growth-share matrix which guides deciding where a company should make investment decisions to maximize return on equity and risk exposure over time, based on its capabilities
Tools such as Porter’s five forces model seek to identify competitive advantages of firms through assessing their bargaining power, the threat of new entrants, barriers to entry/exit from industry competitors, and the threat of substitute products
Techniques such as value chain analysis help firms identify and optimize activities in the supply/demand chain.
The Product Strategy course also covers:
Research-based best practices from different industries around the world including electronics, cosmetics, food, beverages, etc.–to help students apply frameworks, models, or techniques to their business environment.
For example, a framework called Value Opportunity Analysis (VOA) is used for evaluating opportunities based on viability and urgency with criteria that include market size, and available resources among other factors like anticipated competition.
A student might use this tool they learned about during class to analyze an idea they have at work–say for instance starting up a new restaurant by doing an initial assessment using VOA criteria.
