A CTO is the Chief Technology Officer of a company.
They are in charge of all technology within that company and will typically be responsible for hiring good developers to keep up with emerging technologies, testing new products before deployment, making sure everything runs smoothly when changes happen, etc.
The job requires some technical know-how but it requires management skills as well since they have such an impact on how much work their staff has to do.
For example One day somebody working under me came into my office and asked me if I could talk about what a CTO does because he was considering applying for one of those positions at his current employer who just lost theirs. "It's not easy," I told him, citing things like managing budgets, hiring staff to meet current and future needs, making sure systems are secure from hackers, etc.
What are the responsibilities of the CTO?
Responsible for setting a technology roadmap and strategy, which can include the hiring of staff in the area.
Deciding on the company's IT infrastructure (computing resources) such as hardware, software, or cloud computing.
Setting policies like data security and information management to protect company secrets.
Help with designing standards for use by developers when building applications that will work within this environment.
Act as the company's computer expert.
Monitoring progress and performance of IT department to ensure maximum efficiencies, such as identifying bottlenecks in technology or other areas that can be improved.
Can I work as a CTO without technical expertise?
The first thing to consider is if you have the skills in other areas that a CTO would need. If you are an expert at sales or marketing?
Then there may be no issues with going into this role without having technical knowledge. In contrast, if your background is pure as a data scientist and doesn’t know much about how to build a product, you may want to consider an alternative path.
The second thing is if your team has technical expertise in the background needed for the projects that need completing.
If not, and there’s no time or budget allocated for hiring someone with this skillset - then it might be worth considering whether being CTO fits best as part of your portfolio but not as a full-time role.
This way, any project needs can be completed by contracting out a specialist from outside (or even outsourcing entirely).
Ultimately though, try to think about what would make you happy in terms of doing work every day - are you just trying to maximize your income?
Or do you enjoy working on interesting problems and dislike more mundane tasks? If you can find a team with the right mix of technical and non-technical expertise then this could be a good opportunity for you.

It is a difficult question to answer because the salary of certified CTOs can vary depending on what you are looking for and how much experience they have.
What we do know about these individuals though is that many misconceptions are surrounding their salaries.
Questions like: "How much does it cost to be a certified CTO?" or "What's the average salary for a certified CTO?", will never get answered with one number due to those variables mentioned earlier in this blog post (type/experience).
However, I would say that if someone wants an educated guess as to what certification might come out at - then take into account things such as professional certifications being offered by organizations such as APMG International, Cisco Certiport, and CIW.
Their qualifications are usually granted after completing a full-time course or part of one to have the credential for their respective industry - in this case, it would be Information Technology (IT).
So if someone was looking at these credentials that could come with an average wage of $85,000 as a base salary ($40 per hour) before taxes over 40 hours a week which can vary depending on how many certifications they've attained.
This is just an educated guess though but you could research further into what other professionals might say about salaries - like Glassdoor's estimation process for example.
However, I think the best way to find out more information would be to talk with friends who also work in IT since those people know the most about the industry and what they make as certified CTOs.
Where can I get a CTO certification in the USA?
If you want to get a CTO certification, the first question is where? There are many options available. Specifically for USA-based candidates and with US government authorization:
The most well-known option in America is that from (ISC)⊃2; which has been around since 1989.
The CISSP credential offers five areas of expertise within cybersecurity but all require technical knowledge as "technical risk management" - meaning that an applicant should have at least two years relevant experience including one year managing cybersecurity risks or providing expert advice on these issues. It also costs $800/year ($600 if you're eligible for early bird.)
Another US regulatory approved offering comes from ISACA, an international organization who provide their certifications through independent testing centers. In this case, the CISA certification covers five knowledge areas including information security program management and control of cyber risks.
It costs $300/year. For a more generalist approach to cybersecurity - and one that is updated regularly with new threats becoming apparent as well as changes in legislation - there's also their CSX Practitioner credential which includes six modules with access to online resources on technical topics
Finally, ISC offers another option for those who are looking specifically for a vendor-neutral certification from an organization that has been around since 1979: The CISSP RAC (Regulatory Affairs Certification) candidate must have at least three years of experience working in regulatory affairs within IT or related field but does not cover technical skills so would be for a more senior level.

Specifically, there are two options - which training to take or whether you can pass an exam:

Canadian Information Processing Society in Canada is an organization that represents the interests of computer science professionals in Canada.
The Canadian Association for Computer Science was established by members of CAIMSA (the Canadian Association for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) who recognized a need to represent their profession nationally and have been instrumental since its inception in supporting the development and growth of CS education across Canada.
